Gnoll Name Generator

Click the button. Become someone else.

Gnolls are the tabletop world's most committed employees: they show up, they cackle, they eat the encounter budget, and they never file paperwork. Whether you run them as a straightforward hyena-headed hazard or give the pack real culture and terrifying logistics, a gnoll needs a name that sounds like it was coughed up around a bonfire. Gnoll names want harsh consonants, a growl in the middle, and a pack title that doubles as a threat assessment. A goblin sneaks and a kobold schemes, but a gnoll announces itself from a ridge line, and the name has to carry that far.

This generator snaps a guttural given name onto a pack epithet earned through documented menace. Grashka Boneharrow is a warband leader with opinions about your supply lines; Pipkin is not available here. Name a whole raiding pack in one sitting, or find the one matriarch your players will still be talking about three campaigns later.

FAQ

What do gnoll names sound like?
Gnoll names favor harsh, barked syllables with lots of hard g, k, r, and z sounds, the kind of name that works when howled across a battlefield. The second half is usually a pack name or earned epithet describing appetite, hunting style, or a memorable atrocity. Together they read less like an introduction and more like a warning label.
Do gnolls have family names or pack names?
In most settings gnolls organize by pack rather than family, so the second name marks pack allegiance or a personal deed the pack decided was worth remembering. A gnoll who changes packs may take a new name, and a truly infamous deed can become a name that other gnolls fight to inherit. Use the epithet half of this generator as either one.
Can I use these names for gnoll player characters?
Absolutely, and a gnoll adventurer is a fantastic excuse for a name with a story attached. Pick an epithet that no longer fits and let the character grow away from it, or one they are still trying to live up to. A reformed Gravechewer trying to make friends with the party's halfling is an entire character arc in two words.
How do I name a whole gnoll warband quickly?
Generate a name for the leader first and give them the nastiest epithet on offer, then hand out names to lieutenants and let the rank and file share pack epithets. Players only remember two or three names per fight, so spend them where the drama is: the matriarch, her rival, and whichever gnoll keeps escaping the encounter to return two sessions later.
